Exam Centre

RISE AP is proud to be a Pearson Exam approved centre, meaning that we can offer Functional Skills qualifications in English, Maths and Computer studies for the young people we work with.

What are Functional Skills?

Functional skills are a fantastic alternative to GCSEs, they are based on educational content approved by the Department for Education (DfE) that is relevant to the modern workplace. It is this more practical approach to learning that provides learners with the key life skills needed for further education, be that POST-16 courses at college, apprenticeships or future employment.

Where are Functional skills exams taken?

Unlike GCSE’s, which need to be taken in an exam centre alongside others, Functional skills can be taken in a quieter location, be that home or a local library room with just the candidate and our experienced trained invigilators who ensure they have a positive smooth exam experience. We also facilitate access arrangements for students who qualify for a reader, scribe and extra time (based on professional reports). These important adjustments mean that we can provide the right support for individuals to be successful in their exams.

Functional skills Vs GCSEs

Functional skills start from entry level 3 up to Level 2. Students can either work their way through the levels or undertake assessments to determine their starting level. For comparison, a level 2 Functional skills qualification is equivalent to a GCSE pass and is recognised by employers, colleges and universities.

Students can sit Functional Skills exams based on their skill level rather than age and they don’t have to wait until Year 11 to start working towards and completing these exams – which can be sat at any time throughout the year.

What is involved in Functional skills qualifications?

English:-

  • A writing exam (which tests grammar and spelling through composition)
  • A reading exam
  • A speaking and listening assessment.

Maths:-

  • Paper 1 – non calculator exam
  • Paper 2 – calculator exam
