This week, pupils at RISE enjoyed celebrating World Book Day in a variety of meaningful and engaging ways, with activities adapted to suit their individual needs and interests.
Throughout the week, pupils took part in library visits, spent time reading together and explored different types of texts (sometimes reading in very unusual places)! There were also plenty of creative opportunities, including designing and making bookmarks, creating artistic pieces such as favourite characters or alternative book covers and even writing their own stories in the style of their favourite authors.
Pupils also reflected on their favourite books, sharing recommendations and talking about what they enjoy about reading, which led to some lovely discussions and moments of connection. Books were also used within mentoring sessions, helping pupils link stories to their own experiences or to promote engagement in specific activities.
Alongside this, particularly with our older students, we explored the wider benefits of reading, discussing how it can support learning, improve focus and concentration, build imagination and creativity, and provide a way to relax and unwind. These conversations helped pupils to see reading not just as a school activity, but as something that can have a positive impact on their everyday lives.
At RISE, we always value opportunities to take part in national curriculum events like World Book Day. It is important to us that our pupils can experience these shared moments, just as they would in a school setting, while ensuring that activities are delivered in a way that feels accessible, engaging and comfortable for them. It is just one of the ways in which we help pupils to Engage, Succeed, Thrive, RISE.

"The Mentor has a good relationship with R. She communicates and works well with her when she is having a bad day. There is great communication with myself- the reports are detailed and I enjoy reading them. I know RISE has greatly helped my daughter build her confidence and become a happier child."

"O didn't have any support other than myself to help her and was struggling to cope with life, having the opportunity to have Leila in her life has opened her mind to so much. We were extremely struggling to cope so having Leila's support has helped tremendously.
It has given me hope that not every door is shut to her and there are people out there that want to help, and she can get support that she needs. O was extremely negative about anyone being able to support her as no one had in the past so this opportunity has definitely helped her to have more faith in people and to trust the process."

"M has built a great relationship with his mentors especially Jack out of all his mentors and tutors from another AP. Jack has helped M build a trusted relationship and understanding manner.
M has had a positive outcome and enjoys taking part which he didn’t previously and anxiety/communicating, which has really come on since working with Jack. Communication with myself is excellent. Jack has a very understanding kind and great approach, who is a trusted adult. My son feels comfortable with and someone who understands and reassures."
