From Excluded to Empowered: Student Triumphantly Returns to School!

Posted: 28-02-2025

RISE Alternative Provision has achieved a significant milestone this week, successfully reintegrating two pupils back into school, one of which was permanently excluded. This marks an incredible achievement for the student and the team at RISE, showcasing the power of restorative practices, self-regulating strategies, and a commitment to the values of "Engage, Succeed, Thrive."

The process of reintegration into school life following permanent exclusion is often challenging for students and the stakeholders involved. However, RISE Alternative Provision has proven that with the right support, students can not only return to school but thrive there.

At RISE, our approach focuses on building trust, emotional resilience, and the development of self-regulation techniques through Zones of Regulation, that empower students to manage their behaviors and overcome barriers to learning. These strategies were central to the success of the pupils who rejoined their respective schools this week.

"Our work is rooted in helping students regain confidence and develop the skills they need to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom," said Callum Cooper, Director of RISE Alternative Provision. "We are incredibly proud of these students, who have shown remarkable progress and commitment to overcoming their challenges. Reintegration is a testament to their hard work and the importance of a tailored, supportive approach."

Central to the success of this reintegration process was the implementation of personalised self-regulating strategies. These strategies, including mindfulness exercises, emotional check-ins, and conflict-resolution techniques, were taught in collaboration with students and their families to ensure they would feel supported throughout the process.

"Our values of Engage, Succeed, and Thrive are at the heart of everything we do," continued Callum. "Engagement means helping students reconnect with learning; success comes from developing the skills and confidence to thrive in any environment, and thriving is the ultimate outcome of hard work and determination."

One of the key components of the reintegration process is close collaboration with schools, teachers, and families. Through regular communication and bespoke support, RISE ensures that students are not only ready to return but are fully equipped to reintegrate smoothly and successfully.

In the past week, two students—each with their own unique journey—have successfully rejoined education, a remarkable feat that highlights the effectiveness of RISE's commitment to building lasting change.

As students return to school life, they will carry with them the self-regulating strategies and positive mindsets that RISE has worked tirelessly to foster. It is a proud moment for the entire RISE team, and a powerful reminder of the importance of providing every student with the tools they need to succeed.

RISE Alternative Provision remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality, individualised education and support to those in need. This week’s reintegrations are a shining example of the positive impact that alternative provision can have on students’ futures.

“We are always looking forward to the next success story,” explained Callum. “The journey doesn’t end with reintegration; it’s about ensuring long-term success and helping students thrive in their school communities and beyond.”

There is great communication with myself- the reports are detailed and I enjoy reading them. I know RISE has greatly helped my daughter build her confidence and become a happier child."

The RISE Team provided well prepared, high quality and engaging PACE training to staff who work with children aged 3-11. Staff commented on how useful the real life examples were and how these supported them to apply this training in our school environment. The RISE Team worked with leaders before delivering the training which meant we could adapt it to the needs of our school. I have seen many of the strategies being used in school which has lead to the prevention of escalations. Overall,  highly effective training!
